This week on Uncle Nay Nay's Nerdcast, I got to nerd out with someone who speaks my language—comedian, podcaster, wrestling commentator, and full-time sci-fi evangelist Flobo Boyce. Let me tell you, this one was special. Flobo’s got jokes, he's got insight, and he’s got the kind of fan heart that beats in warp speed.

We kicked things off with Star Trek: Discovery. Now buckle up, because Flobo didn’t find Trek the traditional way. Nope, my man fell in love with the Federation while stranded in a hotel room on the Amalfi Coast. Picture it: broke DJ, quiet Italian town, three days to kill. Netflix serves him up Discovery like a photon torpedo to the soul. Boom—he's hooked.

We got deep into what made Discovery click for him—how it flipped the Trek formula, got political without preaching, and introduced a lead (Michael Burnham) who carried both logic and heart like a Vulcan with a conscience. Flobo even shared how growing up in a politically split household made him vibe with the Vulcan code: observe, report, and don’t judge. That’s sci-fi soul food right there.

Then it was time travel o’clock. Flobo broke down Back to the Future like it was sacred text, and honestly? I felt it. He’s all about that mix of heart, ticking clocks, and split timelines. We reminisced about VHS tapes, watching entire trilogies during snow days, and yes, that glorious Back to the Future ride at Universal Studios. If you know, you KNOW.

But the highlight? Men in Black. For Flobo, that movie was more than just aliens in suits—it was a turning point. Comedy, action, a Black lead hero repping Brooklyn? That hit different. He even pitched his dream MIB character—Agent F—a fast-talking drill sergeant teaching alien cadets while doing penance for saving the galaxy in his own “unorthodox” way. Hollywood, take notes.

We played some lightning-round sci-fi questions too:

  • Picard over Kirk (with a belay that order, naturally)

  • DeLorean over Starfleet shuttle

  • Neuralyzer over sonic screwdriver (sorry, Doctor Who fans)

And when I asked what he'd reboot as showrunner? Without hesitation: Homeboys in Outer Space. I nearly fell out of my captain's chair. That answer alone earns him lifetime guest status on the Nerdcast.

You can follow Flobo on BlueSky and X at @FloboBoyce and dive into his blog JustTheSandwich.com. Trust me, it’s the pop culture hoagie you didn’t know you needed.

So until next time, as your resident sci-fi uncle says every week—FOR THE LOVE OF GOD… stay nerdy.
